Vaccines in beer
Researchers at the Moredun Research Institute near Edinburgh are currently developing new
techniques so that we soon may be able to ingest our vaccines rather than having to get the shots
everyone dreads so much. They are still working out all the details and still have a lot of work left to
do but, we hear the research looks promising. We can not imagine the day when we go to the local
pub and order that first vaccine ale to protect us from malaria and influenza. They say it would be
cheaper to manufacture and could also be placed in other types of foods as well, although we will take
our vaccine in a beer any day. Head scientist on the team, John March, stated "Once all the development
and testing work has been completed, what we hope to achieve are 'vaccines in a pill', capable of cheap,
local manufacture anywhere in the world, administered without the need of cold chains, needles and
dedicated medical staff," he went on to say “In effect, they would be stored and bought off the shelf from
the local store. Who knows? If they can be added to food and drink we may be able to vaccinate a child
against malaria by giving them a drink of Coca-Cola." or in our case John an ice cold pint of beer.
